What type of workout maximizes fat burning?

Correct answer: Moderate intensity workouts

The percentage of fat calories burned is higher for low intensity workouts, but this can be misleading. We're really interested in the number of fat calories burned:

a 30-minute low intensity workout causes you to burn about 43% fat calories
a 30-minute moderate intensity workout burns 39% fat calories
a 30-minute high intensity workout burns about 26% fat calories
If you just considered the information above, it looks like low intensity is best. But the total number of calories burned is important, too. For example, a 170 pound individual burns:
195 total calories during a low intensity session
252 total calories at the moderate intensity session
378 total calories at the high intensity session
To find out the number of fat calories burned, multiply the percent of fat calories burned times the total calories burned:
Low Intensity: 43% x 195 = 84 fat calories burned
Moderate Intensity: 39% x 252 = 98 fat calories burned
High Intensity: 26% x 378 = 98 fat calories burned
Using the above formula, this means that the total fat calories burned in the low intensity session would be 84 calories; for the moderate intensity session, 98 calories; and for the high intensity session, 98 calories. The low intensity activity can be continued for a longer time to achieve the same calorie use as moderate or high intensity activity. High intensity activity is more difficult to sustain for long periods. This makes a moderate intensity workout the one of choice.
